ART NOUVEAU AGING IN PLACE - BOSTON, MA

KitchenPersp.jpg

The project called for designing a one floor apartment space in a building located in Boston that would serve as the residential space for an elderly couple. The space had to support aging-in-place, meet ADA guidelines and exhibit sustainable and universal design. The design of the space had to also be inspired by a certain historical design style.

The guiding historical style for the design was Art Nouveau which was translated in the space through a natural color palette and materials, curvy and organic wall movement, and foliage-inspired decor. Because the residents were getting older, handrails were placed around the apartment to help with stability, lights were placed near the floor and places like the kitchen had high contrast areas to help with failing eye sight, and plenty of seating was incorporated around the home. The space also supported the clients’ photography hobby so there is gallery space and an open office to allow for easy communication and travel for the elderly couple and visiting family.
